The Story
Riot Games, Inc. is an independent Los Angeles-based video game development company, who is currently developing its first title, League of Legends.
Although the game is being designed by a decorated group of developers that include team members who created the popular Warcraft 3 mod DotA-Allstars, League of Legends is an MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game. This type of highly complex software is among the most difficult and challenging software projects to successfully complete. Projects like this one have an even higher rate of failure than the already abysmal 70% failure rate in the overall software development projects.
By using industry best practices of Agile and Scrum development, Riot Games had achieved noteworthy successes. But the challenge was that the gain they achieved wasn't going to be enough in order to meet their aggressive schedule. Additionally, Riot Games needed to scale these successes from one of their teams to 4 additional development teams.
The Results
Digital Onion quickly evaluated HOW and WHY Riot Games had achieved the project successes they were already experiencing and developed a strategy for capitalizing and building upon those successes to further increase the development efficiencies. Based on these findings, Digital Onion customized a 2-day, 16 hour training focused on mentoring Riot Games, resulting in 40% increase in velocity across 5 development teams.
